Supplemental Information:
Essential Variables
Cure Time
Environmental Protective Coatings E-2800 was tested with a curing time
interval of 7 days. To date CCC&L has tested systems with a range of cure
times from 1 hour to 2 weeks.
The tested cure time is the minimum interval at which the product will be
cured. Samples were cured in the normal ambient conditions in Michigan.
Coating Thickness
The tested coating average thickness was 5 mils. Per the Research Council
on Structural Connections Specifications, the maximum average coating
thickness will be the average thickness, rounded to the nearest whole mil, of
the coating used on the test specimens minus 2 mils. The maximum average
coating is 3 mils.
Composition
The coating was mixed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations
with no thinner added.
Test Panels
Test panels were saw cut from A?36 hot rolled 5/8" x 4" bar
stock. All panels were sanded around the drilled holes to eliminate any burrs.
The panels were blasted with steel shot. The average profile was 2.1 mils.
Specimen Coating
The coating was applied with airless spray equipment. The time between
paint application and assembly was 7 days for the slip assembly and 7 days for
the creep assemblies.

Compression Test Set-up
The clamping force system CCC&L set up is exactly as described in the
Research Council on Structural Connections Specifications, Appendix A Section
3.1
Compression Load System
The CCC&L frame has a maximum capacity of 110 kips. Our accuracy is
within 1 % of the slip load.
Instrumentation
The clamping force was measured with a calibrated ram.
The compression force was measured using a load cell in series with the
specimen.
The slip deformation was measured with a linear potentiometer. This device
measures the movement of the loading head relative to the base plate. To
account for any slack that may be present, the system was loaded between. 5
and 1 kip before zeroing the linear potentiometer.
Procedures
The test specimens were positioned in the frame to allow for .125" of
slip before bearing contact with the 7/8" rod occurred. Each specimen was
aligned so that the entire bottom surface of the two outside plates was in
contact with the base plate. The spherical head of the testing machine is on
the base plate.
The compressive load is applied at a rate of approximately 20 kips per
minutes. All samples are tested to a travel of at least 0.05 inches (unless
there is reason to believe that there will be a sudden release of pressure
that would unnecessarily damage the testing equipment). An X-Y recorder is
used to simultaneously record slip and load values. This product slipped in a
curve similar to example "C" in the Research Council on Structural
Connections Specifications, Appendix A, Section 3.4.
The average slip load for the first five samples was 51,180 pounds.
These are within the 25% range allowed in the specification. Based on the
above test the co-efficient of slip is .52.
Tension Creep Tests
The CCC&L creep frame is exactly as described in the Research Council
on Structural Connections Specifications, Appendix A Section 4.1. The load is
maintained with four springs. The bolts were A?490 Tension controlled bolts
manufactured by LaJuene Bolt Company. Complete certifications are on file at
CCC&L. All bolts are from lot #0470128. The relative slip is measured on
both sides of the plates using an electronic indicator with an accuracy of
0.001 inches.
The load placed in the creep assemblies was 41 kips. The load was maintained
for 1000 hours. The first readings were taken within ½ hour of loading and
compared to the 1000 hour values. The average creep for each assembly was
calculated. These were. 00025, .0000 and .0005. Since these were all below the
maximum allowable creep of 0.005 inches the assemblies were loaded to a force
equal to the average clamping force of 52.9 kips.* The average creep at the
proof load was calculated for each assembly. These were .00075, .00075 and
.0005. This is below the specification's total creep allowance of 0.015
inches, therefore, Environmental Protective
Coatings E-2800 passes the creep test.
